RE: OREGON COAST

Along with all the other great ideas, we really enjoyed the maritime museum in Astoria.

RE: Most Beautiful State/Federal Road

I would agree about CO 550. Iwould add to the list Hwy 1 in northern California. Also 101 though northern CA and Or.

RE: Police Comments

We rolled on a medical aid call for a fight. When we arrived on man was in cuffs. his face was bloody and we were cleaning him up. He keeps bugging the officer to scrach his nose because it itched. Finally the officer had enough and told the guy "you don't swing at me with a two by four and ask for favors. I'm not that friendly." That was over twenty years ago and I always remembered that.

RE: The first time you met your spouse!

met my wife on a blind date set up by my best friends girl friend. It was her best friend. After the date I did not remember her name but wanted to talk to her again. we spent a few hours on the phone and set up another date. we were engaged in three weeks and married in three months. That was a little over 37 years ago.

RE: Bodie SHP

I like mono village. Some don't because there are no set camp sites, it's where ever you want on the site. The back loop is a no no. Very tight for a TT. It is walking distance to the lake, has a store, cafe and resonable boat rentals. We also like the June lake loop and usually stay at Oh! ridge CG although silver lake is nice. Mono vista is nice for hookups but I have not stayed there.

I am currently reading Stephen Ambrose's nothing like it in the world. A great read about the building of the transcontinental railroad.

RE: Lake Tahoe River Activity worth the $$$? What else to do??

The stream profile chamber near camp richardson is nice. also in the area are several of the old tahoe mansions now owned by the govt. They don't charge for either of these. Donner state park has a nice museum. Truckee has many interesting shops to wander through in old town. There are several boat trips available from camp richardson and zepher cove.

RE: Reno, Carson City Park

I don't remember the name but there is a nice park west of boomtown at Verdi. it's another casino park. I have not stayed there but we took a walk around it last time in Reno. It looked nicer and was cheaper than boomtown. boomtown is OK and there is a free shuttle to the casino and cabelas.

RE: S. CA to Reno

Bodie is a nice trip. The Laws museum in Bishop is about six miles out hwy 6 and is worth a visit. The fish hatcheries are a good choice as well. Mt Whitney hatchery is unfortunately closed due to a major mudslide a few weeks ago that damaged some of the buildings and killed all the fish. There is a the Nevada State Railroad museum in Carson City. While it is a little ways off 395 Virginia City NV is a fun place to visit as well. This would make a good day trip out of Reno as well.

RE: Heading to Lee Vining/Mono Lake, any advice?

Nice photos. Thanks for sharing them. Too bad about the 20D but the 40D is nice. I can't justify the upgrade so I guess I will stay with my 30D. Did you find the arch in the Alabama Hills? It's positioned just right for morning shots of Mt Whitney.

RE: Heading to Lee Vining/Mono Lake, any advice?

A few ideas
Bodie state park
Tuolumne meadows in Yosemite
navy beach tufa formations
Take a ride up Conway summit and visit Virginia Lakes
best food in Lee Vining is at the "Whoa Nellie Deli" located in the Mobil gas station.
The mono cone in LV has a ovaltine malt which is really good
Lake Tahoe is only a few hours away
The visitors center in LV should have more info on the area also.

RE: Crossing Nevada?

I just came across 50 from Ely to Fernley. Its actually a nice drive. There are a few grades and curves but not bad. The worst grade was just east of Austin. Austin and Eureka are both neat little towns. I think Both had fuel if needed. It's much more scenic than 80. I would take 80 from Sacramento to Fernley simply to avoid Tahoe and Carson City traffic.

That could make you grumpy for the rest of the day. DW and I always work as a team. She always gets out to watch our tail and direct me into the best spot. She helps with the setup as well.

RE: Durango, Colorado

I drove the MH and towed from Durango to Siverton a month ago. No problems with that part of the 550. There is some fou lane noth of durango. There was one construction area where they had one lane with a traffic light controlling traffic but it did not hold us up too long. We did not go farther than Silverton so I will let others comment on that part of the road.

RE: Durango/Ouray Trip

I feel comfortable taking my MH and toad to silverton. The road is not bad. There are some steep grades but not bad. The old Eureka townsite is a great place to boondock. Animas forks ghost town is worth a look. Any high clearancs vehicle will get you that far. My son did it in a 2wd toyota tundra. I would not feel comfortable taking my rig over red mountain pass. Its only 23 miles to Ouray from Silverton. Drive it in your TV first see what you think. Ouray makes a great day trip.

RE: Western CO Mountains

Like coptalker says I would not take the MH south of ouray on 550. You should go to ouray though and drive down to silverton in the towed. This is a beautiful part of CO.

RE: winds on 395

There will probably be a lot of cleanup crews around Independece. The flash flood and resulting mud flow which came across 395 destroyed 25 homes and did serious damage to the Mt Whitney fish hatchery. On the plus side the smoke is finally clearing out of the valley. There has not been a lot of wind lately but we have had a few afternoon and evening rain showers. A little off subject but DW is also from anchorage but they left in 1961 I believe. Hope you are having a wonderful trip.
